The European project TAPLINK is holding a series of information and communications technologies (ICT) workshops in Latin America, sponsored by the European Commission and Latin American ICT government authorities.

TAPLINK is funded by the Telematics Applications programme, and was set up to foster Euro-Latin American industrial, commercial and administrative relationships in information and communications technologies (ICT). The workshops aim to create a dialogue between the EU and Latin American countries on ICT, with regard to opportunities in new data exchange technologies such as e-commerce, e-training, teleworking and multimedia. Developments in the Telematics Applications programme, the Fifth Framework Programme, and other joint activities will be presented and discussed.

The first workshops will be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on 2 and 3 November 1999; and then on 18 and 19 November in Lima, Peru; on 22 and 23 November in Mexico City, Mexico;, followed by 19 and 20 January 2000 in Santiago, Chile. Other workshops will be run in May 2000 in Cuba and Brazil.

Four main themes will be developed:

- Strategies for creating a global friendly information society: linking high-tech EU programmes with emerging Latin American activities;
- Progress in the Information Society and the underpinning developments in enterprise information systems: Internet and e-commerce;
- The application of new technologies in leading ICT sectors and TAP results covering commercial, industrial and administrative sectors, transport, training, R&D and health;
- Strategists round tables: leading European and Latin American personalities will launch business co-operation schemes, high-tech exchanges, and common R&D projects.
