A conference entitled 'RISK 2000 - Space techniques for the management of major risks and their consequences: Initiatives in the Euro-Mediterranean region and worldwide' will be held in Paris from 5 to 7 April 2000.

The European Commission, the European Space Agency and the Council of Europe, assisted by the European space agencies, have recently undertaken a joint effort to foster the use of space techniques for the management of major disaster risks.

The conference therefore aims to establish the state-of-the-art in the use of space techniques for risk management, to create awareness of the operational use of space techniques, to assess the implication of industries as well as the contribution of Europe to international efforts in relationship with UNESCO, and to list, and make recommendations on, the initiatives to be taken in the short, medium and long terms and the associated agendas.

The conference will cover seven stages in risk management: knowledge, prevention, warning, and management of emergency situations, post analysis of crisis, rehabilitation, education and training. It will deal with three themes: natural risks, technological risks, and preservation of cultural heritage (with respect to risk). Related legal issues will also be covered.

The conference will draw top-level speakers to highlight the way space techniques can be combined with traditional sources and methods to provide timely, reliable and effective information to all organisations and companies concerned with the management of disasters, before, during and after a major event. The conference is directed towards space agencies, research laboratories, academia, industry and policy makers, as well as insurers.
