Catch up with Marine Microbes: Fourth Issue of MaCuMBA Project News Now Available
In this issue of MaCuMBA Project News: an interview with Prof Fergal O’Gara from the BIOMERIT Research Centre (BRC) at University College Cork (UCC), Ireland, who is the leader of MaCuMBA Work Package 5 (WP5), Cell to cell communication in community cultures, isolation and cultivation; details of some of the growing number of scientific publications acknowledging MaCuMBA; Prof Marcel Jaspars, Director of the Marine Biodiscovery Centre of the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, discusses the FP7-funded PharmaSea Project; and the newsletter's Under the Microscope section provides an in-brief look at some stories relating to marine microorganisms that have been making the news.

MaCuMBA is led by the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) and is a joint venture of 23 partner institutions from 11 EU countries with the common aim to uncover the untold diversity of marine microbes using cultivation-dependent strategies. MaCuMBA aims to improve the isolation rate and growth efficiency of marine microorganisms from conventional and extreme habitats by applying innovative methods and using automated high-throughput procedures. AquaTT is the communication and dissemination partner for the project.
