The World Engineers' convention will be held in Hannover, Germany, from 19 to 21 June 2000, and will run as technical preliminary event of the world exposition EXPO 2000.

EXPO 2000 has the theme 'Mankind-Nature-Technology' and is intended as a platform for world-wide discussions on global issues.

'This central theme represents a very special challenge to the engineers of the entire world', says Verein Deutscher Ingenieure (VDI), the organisers of the World Engineers' Convention.

With this in mind, VDI (the Association of Engineers, Germany) and the EXPO 2000 GmbH are collaborating to organise the World Engineers' convention, which will also carry the central theme of 'Mankind-Nature-Technology'. The event will bring together around 3000 engineers and leading experts from other fields to discuss the following topics:

- Environment, climate, health:
- - Effects on people and natural systems;
- - Ecological, economical and social aspects;
- - Conservation of resources through recycling and energy saving.

- Future of work:
- - The workforce of the 21st century;
- - Projects in the world-wide community;
- - People and technology in the workplace of the future;
- - The organisation of labour in the company of the future.

- Mobility:
- - International view of mobility;
- - Infrastructure, energy resources, emissions;
- - Propulsion systems;
- - Safety and information systems;
- - Mobility in urban areas;
- - Transportation networks.

- Information and Communication:
- - Networking;
- - Human-computer interaction;
- - Virtual enterprises;
- - Data security;
- - Computer supported cooperative work;
- - Education and knowledge;
- - Mobility of information.

- Energy:
- - Energy and sustainability;
- - Future tasks of energy engineers;
- - Energy needs of people;
- - Energy needs in less developed and industrialised countries;
- - Rational energy use in complex systems;
- - Air conditioning in the 21st century;
- - Energy supply;
- - Central/decentralised power station systems;
- - Perspectives for the next millennium.

There will be an exhibition and presentations, workshops, and real and virtual forums designed for engineers, students and women in engineering.
