A conference entitled 'Towards a sustainable Information Society', organised by the Joint Research Centre's Institute for Prospective Technological Studies and the 'Alliance for a sustainable Information Society' (ASIS) project funded by the EU's ACTS programme, will take place in Brussels on 21 and 22 February 2000.

The aim of the conference is to bring together researchers from both the Information Society and sustainable development perspectives to raise awareness of the issues affecting both and strengthen synergies between the two. The main issues which will be the focus of the conference are:

- Different perspectives of a sustainable Information Society in both global and regional contexts;
- Practical steps, based on the results of the ASIS project, which can lead towards a sustainable Information Society.

While the main issues surrounding sustainability include environmental, economic , social and cultural aspects, the Information Society will have particular importance in supporting and developing social sustainability and cultural identities. The conference will attempt to set out strategies and policies to support a sustainable Information Society.
