The European Commission is organising an awareness information day in Brussels on 27 January 2000 to inform parents and all people dealing with children on the best way to protect minors from harmful content on the Web. It is part of a Community Action Plan on promoting safer use of the Internet.

The event hopes to stimulate interest in a call for proposals to be published in March 2000 for awareness actions, following a disappointing response to a similar call launched in 1999. This new call will be for proposals that will identify the most appropriate channels, content and organisations through which to reach the target audience.

The event aims to attract those responsible for education policy and provision of IT in schools, media awareness, teachers, youth protection, and libraries. In the private sector it is hoped representatives from industry (network operators, Internet service and content providers), and voluntary bodies will attend.

The Commission is particularly looking for organisations wishing to take part in a consortium to put forward a proposal, although taking part in the information meeting does not involve any commitment.
