An international conference on 'Rural Transport 2000: Transport solutions to sustain the rural economy' will take place in Lancaster, United Kingdom, on 6 and 7 April 2000. Technical visits are also offered in advance of the event, on 5 April 2000.

The conference is hosted by the Community Transport Association for the Virgil project - funded by the EU's Transport research programme (Fourth Framework Programme) - with support from Lancashire County Council.

The programme includes speakers from Europe and the United States and covers a wide range of topics including rural transport policy; service levels and quality standards; links between transport, rural development and local planning; demand responsive systems; services for people with reduced mobility; freight/passenger integration; marketing rural services; area-based interagency coordination; regulatory frameworks; best value from public finances; direct subsidies to rural users; integrating health, social care and school transport journeys; long distance buses and rural rail partnerships; taxi-buses and automated scheduling; and services using volunteers.
