The Joint Research Centre and the ETeMII project are organising the sixth European Commission GI and GIS workshop on 'The spatial Information Society - Shaping the future', which will take place in Lyon, France, from 28 to 30 June 2000.

This theme has been chosen to reflect the important role that GI (geographical information) plays in the Information Society, says the Joint Research Centre.

The workshop will provide a unique opportunity for researchers, developers and users to come together to demonstrate and share new developments, exploit synergies, discuss common problems and provide input to the EU's Fifth RTD Framework Programme.

In addition to European Commission sponsored projects the workshop will include contributions from other GI and GIS initiatives and projects.

The workshop organisers are now calling for abstracts of papers to be presented at the event.
