Meet the NOTOX project @ EUROTOX 2015

The NOTOX research consortium, headed by Prof. Dr. Elmar Heinzle of Saarland University, is pleased to share with you exciting outcomes of its ambitious project at the occasion of its symposium Predicting Long Term Toxic Effects Using Computer Models Based on Systems Characterization of Organotypic Cultures – The NOTOX Project taking place during the EUROTOX 2015 in Porto.
NOTOX is one of the building block projects of the European research initiative ‘Safety Evaluation Ultimately Replacing Animal Testing’ (SEURAT) funded by the EU-FP7 HEALTH programme and the European Cosmetics Association, Cosmetics Europe.
The overall aim of NOTOX is to develop an integrated multifaceted experimental and computational platform by applying a systems biology approach for long-term toxicity prediction on molecular, cellular and tissue level. The experimental work is focused on the application of cellular systems that come closest to human in vivo situation and their transfer into applicable and easy-to-handle test systems. In these test systems viability and physiological toxicity response parameters, '-omics', are monitored together with genetic, epigenetic and structural characteristics. Eventually, multi-scale models of regulatory and metabolic pathways as well as cellular systems together with bioinformatics integration of human and cross species literature data are used for reliable toxicity prediction.
