Mr. Martin Bangemann, Commissioner whose portfolios include Directorates-General III and XIII, visited DG XIII in Luxembourg on 29 April 1993.

His purpose was to extend his understanding of the activities of Directorate D, (research and technological development; dissemination and exploitation of RTD results, technology transfer and innovation) and of Directorate E (information industry and market; language processing). He also stated his views on the information industry, RTD exploitation and technology transfer.

The key role of DG XIII, according to Commissioner Bangemann, is to support European industrial competitiveness. He wants all European firms, including the smallest, to have easy access to information on Community RTD, patents and standards.

A special CORDIS demonstration of the centralized host version, based on ECHO, and the CD-ROM version, was well-appreciated by the Commissioner, who is in favour of the concept of a single door to a broad range of Community information.

Subsequently, Mr. Bangemann addressed all DG XIII's Luxembourg personnel, and emphasized the importance of support for industrial competitiveness as a means to reduce unemployment and to improve the quality of life.
