The Portuguese Ministry of Economy is holding a seminar on 'Business, eco-efficiency and sustainable development: The role of environmental management tools', in Lisbon from 1 to 3 March 2000.

The event is aimed to review the development and use of environmental management tools in European business and to assess how public authorities can assist in the development and implementation of such tools in business. It will also look to recommend priority actions and activities to support the promotion of these tools as a contribution to the development of a strategy for the integration of environmental concerns and sustainable development into the industrial and enterprise policy of the EU.

The Portuguese Minister of Economy, Mr Joaquim Pina Moura, together with Mr Fabio Colasanti, Director General of the European Commission's Enterprise Directorate-General, and Mr Carlos Campos Morais, President of INETI (the {Portuguese National Institute for Engineering and Industrial Technology) will chair the event.

The conference sessions will cover:

- The contribution of business to sustainable development: views from the stakeholders;
- State of the art and new developments on environmental management tools;
- Developments and implementation in business;
- Contribution of environmental management tools to sustainable development: views from international organisations and non governmental organisations (NGOs);
- The role of public authorities in the promotion and development of environmental management tools;
- Presentation of conclusions and general discussion panel with steering group members.

Representatives from companies and business organisations, the governments of the EU Member States and from other OECD countries, academia, research organisations, environmental NGOs and trade unions are invited to attend.
