Evolution of FIRE: Facilities, Services and Collaboration Strategies for Sustainability.

Pre-FIA Workshop, 17-18 March 2014, Athens

17 March 2014 - 18 March 2014
Austria
The European Commission’s FIRE programme has brought Europe several large-scale test beds and platforms addressing a broad range of applications, services and technologies for the Future Internet. These facilities have already supported advanced experiments proving that experimentally-driven research and innovation are key mechanisms for the development of the Future Internet. As many of these facilities are mature enough to be opened up for wider use, now is the time to explore ways of making them sustainable after EC or national funding has expired.

The workshop “Evolution of FIRE: Facilities, Services and Collaboration Strategies for Sustainability” in Athens on 17-18 March 2014, organised by the EU-funded support projects AmpliFIRE, CI-FIRE and FUSION at FIA2014 (http://www.fi-athens.eu/(opens in new window)) addresses exactly this FIRE sustainability issue.

The workshop looks at both the demand and supply side of FIRE facilities to help define pathways towards sustainability by creating a dynamic ecosystem that can continue to evolve over time. The workshop focuses on opportunities for business, service-related, infrastructural, technical and organisational collaboration within and outside FIRE, zooming in on FIRE’s role in relation to the demands of business players and to other large-scale Future Internet Facilities.

On the supply side, the workshop targets potential providers of test beds, FIRE projects, developers and operators from FIRE, the FI-PPP, EIT ICT Labs, Living Labs, as well as national and regional test beds. On the supply side, it is of particular interest to small and medium-sized businesses and large corporations who can gain insight on rekindling innovation and facilitating business creation through new product and service validation across diverse sectors.

“The session on market demand and requirements for FIRE facilities brings together representatives from EIT ICT Labs and the Future Internet Public Private Partnership (FI-PPP), covering needs from businesses, large and small. It also looks at future experimentation requirements to ensure FIRE facilities continue to be demand-driven”, Hans Schaffer, Aalto University and AmpliFIRE.

“The session on business-driven developments of Internet services and applications focuses on how FIRE facilities can increasingly support innovation and business creation. Startups have already been both users and contributors to FIRE but many SMEs could benefit from experimental platforms for their product development phase. This is important to boost efforts aimed at supporting innovation and business creation for SMEs”, Jean-Charles Point, JCP Consult and FUSION.

“At the workshop we will a dedicated session to explore collaboration opportunities for the economic viability of FIRE facilities and services. In particular, the session is focused on the potential roles of initiatives and stakeholders in Europe and globally, including EIT ICT Labs, GÉANT and GENI in the US. We will be looking at the underlying business models and pathways towards concrete collaborations as part of a collective drive towards sustainability” Milon Gupta, Eurescom, coordinator of CI-FIRE.

“The workshop concludes with an interactive discussion that draws on the findings from the previous sessions. It zooms in on the future evolution of FIRE to help define a roadmap and action plan, including the development of the market, customers, facilities, services, as well as collaborative efforts aimed at shaping the 2020 vision for a dynamic, sustainable, large-scale experimental facility for Europe”, Martin Potts, Martel, AmpliFIRE, CI-FIRE, FUSION.

About AmpliFIRE
AmpliFIRE focuses on developing a sustainable 2020 vision for Future Internet research and experimentation, setting out a transition path by identifying current gaps that need to be filled to meet long-term demands and identifying how capabilities must evolve. It also serves as an aggregator of all FIRE facilities, research projects and activities, www.ict-fire.eu/home/amplifire.html.

About CI-FIRE
CI-FIRE works closely with FIRE projects and EIT ICT Labs through the FanTaaStic project to analyse the sustainability potential of FIRE facilities and national test beds. It is analysing different collaboration models, performing a feature mapping and benchmarking analysis, and producing a business planning tool for test facilities to assess their sustainability plans as well as customers and revenue streams, www.ci-fire.eu.

About FUSION
FUSION helps connect SMEs that need to test new applications with relevant FIRE test beds. FUSION enables SMEs and their clusters to provide their specific requirements and search technical offers, while also pursuing close engagement with the business community. FUSION will produce a roadmap and recommendations for testing of applications on facilities, www.sme4fire.eu.
