WEFTA 2014: SEAFOOD Science for a changing demand

The 44th international meeting of the West European Fish Technologists Association, WEFTA 2014 (www.wefta2014.org) will be held this year in Bilbao on the 9th, 10th and 11th June under the title “SEAFOOD science for a changing demand”.

This year, as a novelty, the programme of the meeting will offer a special session aimed at the industry, including market and technology sections in which business presentations will be combined with scientific presentations in an attractive format.
The WEFTA 2014′s theme “SEAFOOD Science for a changing demand” will be covered and elaborated through the following seven session topics:
1.Safety evaluation and emerging risks
2.Seafood quality reassurance
3.Integrity authenticity and differentiation of products
4.Sustainable use of catches and farming
5.Advances in seafood processing technology and smart control
6.Product innovation, consumer acceptance and expectations
7.Seafood from the world for the European cuisine

As an innovative aspect, it has also been organized a session focusing on the industry, including market and technology sections.

The event will be focused in the R+D+i oriented to global societal needs, looking for innovative solutions to meet the new demands, regarding that that the Global Seafood Markets in 2030 will be characterized by:
◦Demand for seafood is expected to increase strongly
◦The value of attributes and information are increasingly important
◦Product innovation increase demand
◦Aquaculture is competitive – Innovations are leading to rapid technological progress
◦Seafood prices will rise by up to 70% between now and 2050 due to shortage of supply and wage growth?
◦Dominated by Aquaculture, with Wild Fish as Niche Market Products?

Bilbao, the biggest city in the north of Spain and the economic driving force in the Basque Country, is hosting the 44th WEFTA meeting which, on this occasion, is hosted by AZTI-Tecnalia.
