The role of industry in Africa-EU science capacity building cooperation
The 4th Africa-EU summit will take place in Brussels on 2-3 April 2014. It will bring together African and EU leaders, as well as the leaders of EU and African Union institutions under the theme "Investing in People, Prosperity and Peace". The summit will be an opportunity to take a fresh look at the Africa-EU partnership, to highlight some of the results that have been achieved, and to explore areas for future cooperation.
Although both continents are already committed to seize further cooperation opportunities and expand their political, economic, investment and trade ties, the summit will further reiterate the need for joint EU-Africa action in all sectors, beyond aid, which should serve as the main engine of and reference for any type of Africa-Europe dialogue.
AERAP will build on this theme during the seminar and engage the participants in a focused discussion on the role of industry in Africa-EU science capacity building cooperation in order to stimulate economic growth, human capital development and job creation across both continents. Innovation showcases, such as the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), will be positioned at the centre of the discussion.
The seminar will provide an exclusive platform to consider and, ultimately, inform the policy foundations for a trans-national research and innovation eco-system. Moreover, the garnered support of decision-makers from both continents will allow AERAP to inform the debate surrounding the Summit; bringing the role of trans-continental science and technology collaboration for African socio-economic development to the forefront.

The African-European Radio Astronomy Platform (AERAP)
AERAP is a response to the calls of the European Parliament, through the adoption of the Written Declaration 45/2011, and of the Heads of State of the African Union, through their decision “Assembly/AU/Dec.407 CXVIII”, for radio astronomy to be a priority focus area for Africa-EU cooperation. AERAP is a stakeholder forum of industry, academia and the public sector established to define and implement priorities for radio astronomy cooperation between Africa and Europe.
The overall goals of the platform are to leverage radio astronomy, advance scientific discovery, improve knowledge transfer and stimulate competitiveness across both continents. The platform will also enable effective dialogue to build a shared vision for international cooperation in radio astronomy.
