WEFTA 2014 international meeting focuses on new demands for fish and aquaculture products

The main goal of the next international meeting of the West European Fish Technologists Association (WEFTA) is to find innovative solutions to comply with the new social demands regarding sea products.

9 June 2014 - 11 June 2014
Austria
Under the title "SEAFOOD Science for a changing demand", WEFTA 2014 (www.wefta2014.org) will gather researchers and professionals from throughout Europe from 9 to 11 June in Bilbao. The sessions will be hosted by AZTI-Tecnalia, a technology centre specialised in marine and food research.

The event will be a great opportunity for marine product-related services to adapt to changes through science and innovation. The WEFTA 2014 event will address key issues such as integrity, authenticity and differentiation of products; health benefits, safety and quality of fish and fish-products; the sustainable use of catches and farming; innovation in the development and processing of fish and aquaculture products, among other topics.

The end consumer will be the protagonist of the sessions. The experts will debate and present solutions to satisfy the consumers' new expectations. In this sense, they will assess how to integrate worldwide seafood in European cuisine.

As an innovation, this year's programme will include a special session focusing on the industry, including sections devoted to the market and technology, and different scientific presentations in an attractive format.

The market in 2030
The fish and aquaculture markets in the near future will be the main focus of the sessions. The experts believe that by 2030, these markets will be characterised by a significant increase in the consumption of seafood; namely, European citizens will increase average consumption by 2 Kg per capita. The demand for information on sustainability, traceability and the characteristics of products will increase. We will also see a significant development in fish farming to satisfy the requirements for fish and the increase in prices.

Centre of reference in food and marine research
AZTI-Tecnalia is a Foundation aiming to promote the research and study of marine, agri-food, environmental sciences and in general, those related to natural resources, the marine environment and food. In this context, it helps to improve the efficiency of the fishery sectors, aquaculture, the transformation of fish products and all those activities that are directly or indirectly related with the use and exploitation of the sea and its resources.
