A conference on the effects of modern biotechnology on biodiversity will seek proposals for action and will be held in Bern, Switzerland, from March 9 to 12 2000.

A highly informed discussion is expected to consider the relations between biotechnology and biodiversity. It will be built around the following topics:

- Impact of agricultural biotechnology on ecosystems;
- Social, ethical and legal issues;
- Impact on biotechnology and conservation;
- Conclusions and the way ahead.

The conference organisers anticipate contributions from experts from a number of institutions around the world.

The conference is sponsored by the Task Group of Public Perception in Biotechnology (TGPPB), the European Federation of Biotechnology (EFB), Beer-Brawand-Stiftung, Bern and Monsanto.

The conference proceedings will be published.
