Following the European Commission's calls for proposals for new and renewable technologies for sustainable development in June 1999, the Portuguese Instituto Superior Tecnico, the University of Minnesota, USA, and the University of Rome, Italy, will hold a 'Euro-conference' on the subject from 26 to 29 June 2000 in Madeira island, Portugal.

The conference will consider:

- Tools for Planning, design, assessment and evaluation-computerised tools, and telematic systems;
- Environmental impact and long term cost/benefit analysis;
- Methods for identification and pilot plans for communities aiming at 100% RES (renewable energy sources) isolated areas, islands, tourist areas and new urban developments;
- Engineering and system design aspects of the following topics: biomass conversion, Thermal and photovoltaic systems, passive and active solar systems in building, small scale hydro power projects, wind power, geothermal energy, tidal power and other ocean energies;
- Technologies for sustainable development, optimisation of energy systems, fuel cell technologies, gas turbines, co-generation, combined cycles, sustainable technologies for the home, rural technologies and energy and water co-generation.
