Getting innovative regions together and focusing on how they can capitalise on their positions is the main theme of the forthcoming Innovating Regions in Europe (IRE) annual meeting in Madrid, Spain, on 15 June 2000. The IRE's second plenary meeting, part of the regional innovative strategies (RIS, RITTS) network, will look at issues such as funding, evaluating past projects, and how improvements can be made, and will provide workshops for discussion.

The event gathers the project managers and representatives of regional authorities of all the RITTS/RIS and transregional innovation projects. The participants will have the opportunity for an exchange of views with each other and the Commission.

Bilateral meetings will also be available enabling partnerships to be developed between different European states, through the 'Regiopartenariat' partnering event taking place on the second day.

RITTS, RIS and trans regional innovation projects are designed to promote cooperation between firms, public administrations and agencies to assess innovation and technology requirements and audit local needs, capabilities and potential with a view to improving the regional innovation system.
