A congress aimed to show that in situ remediation of sites polluted with chlorinated solvents and heavy metals can be successful will be held in Utrecht, The Netherlands, on 9 and 10 October 2000.

The congress is organised as part of the Chlorem-Bunnik remediation project. It is aimed to evaluate the technological, economic and social feasibility as well as the realisation of in-situ soil remediation techniques. The organisers also hope the event will provide a forum for the exchange of knowledge and to initiate new cooperative undertakings.

Topics will include the implementation of techniques, full-scale installations, problems and solutions, and new insights.

Several workshops are planned to discuss certain common problems in more detail. These will include:

- The relation between scientific research and the successful implementation of remediation technologies;
- The effect of bio-augmentation or stimulation of the intrinsic microbial community;
- Substrate infiltration and policy: what can be allowed?

The results of a special EU-demonstration project on this topic will also be included in the programme.
