The challenges facing the Czech Republic in meeting both the requirements of the environmental guidelines set down by the EU and complying with its liberalised energy market will be the central themes in the project 'Energy and the environment in the Czech Republic'.

The project is sponsored by Germany's Federal Environmental Agency as a means to help the Czech Republic reach the necessary criteria in these areas.

Part of the project involves two workshops to analyse the key issues. The first workshop will take place in Prague on 22 March, focusing on political, economic and ecological aspects of Czech accession to the EU. The second taking place in Liberec on 30 and 31 May will look directly at concrete projects involving Czech/German cooperation in the lead up to the former's accession.

As the Czech Republic moves toward integration with the enlarged European Union, help and assistance provided by its neighbour Germany will be key.
