Robert Verrue, Director-General of the Information Society DG, is set to outline the Commission's vision of the European telecommunications industry, at the European Telecoms 2000 event, being held in London, UK, on 17 and 18 May 2000.

The global telecommunications industry is on the verge of a fundamental shift in the way it does business, and European deregulation has created a massive new marketplace. Mobile broadband is just taking off, with the introduction of a range of new applications including Wireless Application Protocol (WAP).

Each month a new takeover or merger is announced that cuts across traditional, technological, industry and geographical divides to create a new market with new players and new standards. The role of the regulator is such a market place will be crucial.

The event will bring together chief executives, European presidents, chief operating officers and other interested parties from the telecommunications industry to discuss strategies for growth in Europe's high-bandwidth markets, both fixed and mobile.

Topics to be covered include regulation and competition, the business drivers for broadband services, mobile telecommunications, fibre optic IP networks, cable and broadband wireless.
