How will the latest technologies affect the textile and clothing sector? This will be the central theme of the 'Information technologies in textiles and clothing' conference taking place in Italy on 23 and 24 March. Discussion and dialogue at the Lake Como conference, which is supported by the European Commission's Information society promotion office, are designed to lead to concrete recommendations which can help in forming a programme of actions for the sector.

Areas which the conference will focus on include how Information and communication technologies (ICT) can assist in functions from production through to marketing of firms in this sector. The use of ICT could, for example, reduce the 'time to market' for many products, thereby enhancing the sustainability and even profitability of textile and clothing companies.

Practical solutions, which have already been put into practice by firms, will be on show at the conference. Speakers will include Enrico Letta, Italy's Minister for industry trade and crafts and Joanna Tachmintzis, DG Enterprise, Head of unit textile, leather and toys sectors, European Commission.
