Weaving the Internet of Data: High level European policy meeting on funding research data to support open innovation

In order to push forward the discussion about these main challenges, RDA is organizing this high level policy meeting on 6 April in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Current and potential funders and other experts in data creation, curation and re-use, are invited to discuss and address issues regarding how research data in general and the RDA activities in particular are and should be funded in the future to ensure a convergent and coherent approach.

The Research Data Alliance (RDA) is an international member-based organisation focused on the development of infrastructure and community activities to reduce the social and technical barriers to data sharing and re-use and to promote the acceleration of data driven innovation and discovery worldwide.

The potential of greater collaboration for generating growth and jobs, as well as societal benefit of data infrastructures in furthering research into grand challenges, is becoming more and more evident.

“Policy and legislation play a key role in enabling the full use of skills and resources through digitalization and open data infrastructures. The rapid and dramatic changes happening in the way research is conducted require new ways of thinking and acting, and the Digital Single Market can be a game changer if we build it in a way that provides support, rather than regulation for open science, infrastructures and innovation. Europe’s competitiveness is at stake, so now is the time to act.”

Outcomes of the meeting “Open innovation, open scholarship and open infrastructures insights to the European Digital Single Market” which took place at the European Parliament, Brussels, 10 November 2015

How should this process be coordinated?
RDA leverages on past investments made by member states and funding agencies to the development of research infrastructures, big data research projects, open access policies, and more. Following on from the European Commission’s continuing support of the global Research Data Alliance, Funding Agencies are now seeking to support networking and individual projects focused on promoting and facilitating open data sharing and exchange across Europe and beyond. The need now is twofold: design an engagement and coordination model to help the organisation run more effectively and help maximise the impact of volunteer efforts. And identify new funding mechanisms to support a wide range of initiatives driving open science and open innovation.

Current and potential funders and other experts in data creation, curation and re-use, are invited to discuss and address issues regarding how research data in general and the RDA activities in particular are and should be funded in the future to ensure a convergent and coherent approach. The aim is to ensure that the objectives are synchronised and build upon previous achievements, to maintain Europe as a driver in this rapidly developing global environment.
