Postgraduate students (at PhD and M.Sc. level) now have the opportunity to enrol in a summer course on 'Processes in the coastal zone: links to management issues', which will be held in Bologna, Italy, from 3 to 14 July 2000.

The course aims to provide young scientists with the opportunity to be brought up to date with the latest developments and applications in their field.

The core of the course will consist of lectures highlighting fundamentals and advances in the knowledge of key processes in the coastal zone with links to management issues.

Attention will focus on the key physical and biogeochemical processes determining the behaviour of coastal areas. Students will be shown how to use a process-based approach to consider how the impact of natural and anthropogenic modifications to the coastal environment will require risk assessment, management and political decisions. The need for an integrated approach to address these problems will be stressed.

To illustrate this, representatives from the European Commission's Land-Ocean-Interaction (LOIS) project and the Coastal Zone management demonstration project (ICZM) will present the most recent concepts in the field.

There will also be several seminars held with invited scientists and discussions will be encouraged during lectures, with special sessions dedicated to discussions of interdisciplinary studies from different points of view.

The Italian CNR - Consiglio nazionale delle ricerche - is organising the course, which is one of the advanced schools operating under the European Commission's 'Leonardo da Vinci' programme for continuing education. The course is open to participants from all over the world, although there will be a maximum of 70 students on the course.

The deadline for applications is 28 April 2000.
