The official launch of research training networks (RTNs) in the Fifth Framework programme (FP5) will take place on 9 June 2000 in Brussels. The meeting will be attended by Research Commissioner Philippe Busquin, Prof. 't Hooft (one of the current Physics Nobel Prize winners) and the new FP5 RTN co-ordinators.

The primary objective of RTNs is to promote the training-through-research of young researchers in high quality international collaborative research projects. Following the first call for proposals in FP5, 167 RTNs have been selected for funding in the areas of chemistry, economics, social and human sciences, engineering sciences, environment and geosciences, life sciences, mathematics and information sciences and physics.

To date, new FP5 contracts have been signed between the Commission and 47 RTNs. Pre- and post-doctoral positions are now available for young researchers up to the age of 35 (with allowances made for childcare and military service). All 167 RTNs in FP5 are expected to be operational by the beginning of October.
