The advanced biotechnology center of Genoa Italy, and the Genoa fair and exhibition authority are organising 'TEBIO 2000', a major international exhibition and congress on biotechnology, from 24 to 26 May 2000.

The event will showcase the life sciences and biotechnology. It will provide a forum for experts and stakeholders to meet and discuss recent developments in the critical analysis of major issues surrounding research and applications in the field of healthcare, environmental protection, agriculture and agro-food industries, investment capital, industrial development policy and exploitation.

Special attention will be given to the review and debate of major socio-economic issues, particularly consumer protection matters and ethical concerns.

The conference organisers have won funding from the Accompanying measures component of the European Commission's Quality of Life and management of living resources programme, under the Fifth Framework programme (FP5). They are therefore offering grants to university students to offset registration fees for the conference as well as lodging and some travel costs. Each grant will amount to approximately 500 euro.

'Applicants must be able to prove their university student status (applications from post-doctoral researchers will not be accepted), providing their curriculum vitae (including any publications) and a short letter from their laboratory department director. To stimulate crossover participation, applicants with training/background in financial/economic sciences and social sciences will be welcomed. Preference will be given to women and to candidates from less favoured regions,' say the event organisers.

Application guidelines and the application form are available from the TEBIO 2000 website at:
