REMPI project public workshop comes to Brussels
REMPI is an ESPRIT IV project, which began in January 1998, aimed at 're-engineering the mailer-post interface'. It involves two major postal services - Deutsche Post and Royal Mail - and two major mailing equipment manufacturers - Neopost and Pitney Bowes - in the development and building of prototype services, systems and products.
The postal service forms a vital link in the electronic commerce chain through the physical delivery of goods and messages.
Historically, postal services have invested a great deal in automation for advanced materials handling and information technology. Indeed the vast majority of mail is produced by or under the control of computer systems.
The REMPI project aims to realise the benefits of these investments by improving the mailer-post interface. 'Such automated data exchange will improve efficiency, provide new value added service opportunities and reduce exposure to fraud,' claims the project synopsis.
The project will address these issues, and test and operationally evaluate the following:
- standards for the customer identification of mail items and for the electronic communication of mail item data;
- secure electronic accounting for mail services, linked to computer generated printing of accounting evidence on mailpieces;
- the use of encryption for privacy, data-integrity and authentication purposes;
- reconciliation of electronic accounting data with the physical mail services provided;
- electronic provision of proof of acceptance and tracking services to customers.
Event organisers are inviting potential participants to register their interest to the address below. A detailed programme will be published in early May.
