The first European research meeting focused on the consumer benefits of biotechnology applied to food production will be held in Norwich, UK, from 6 to 9 September 2000.

'Participants at the conference, dubbed 'NEODIET' will focus on examining the potential need for improving a selected range of essential nutrients and beneficial factors present in plant foods but where the levels are possibly inadequate for health' say the event organisers.

These include: vitamin E, vitamin C, folates, carotenoids, glucosinolates and plant sterols; simple and complex phenols including: anthocyanins, flavonols flavones and flavonols, flavanones, chalcones and dihydrochalcones, isoflavones, lignans and stilbenes, hydroxybenzoic acids, proanthocyanidins and tannins, ellagitannins, oleuropein and related compounds, chlorogenic acids and other cinnamates.

The conference is organised in association with the European Commission's initiative for Quality of Life and management of living resources, part of the Fifth RTD Framework Programme.
