The results of a European Commission funded project designed to strengthen the role of the local public transport operator in improving overall transport quality, will be presented at an international workshop to be held in Vienna, Austria on 6 and 7 June 2000.

The EQUIP project, (Extending the Quality of Public Transport), developed a self -assessment handbook for benchmarking quality which will form the basis of discussion, together with an examination of future developments in benchmarking.

The workshop will cover the following:

- technical visit to the Wiener-Linien, a Viennese public transport operator;
- benchmarking in passenger transport - working towards better efficiency through benchmarking;
- the EQUIP Benchmarking Tools: the EQUIP Handbook and results of the benchmarking exercise, case studies from users of the handbook;
- achieving efficiency gains: targeting areas for improvements, setting up project teams, case studies of improvements, golden rules and how not to do it, impact on competitiveness;
- formalising benchmarking: institutionalising benchmarking and developing a benchmarking network.
