An international workshop entitled 'Reducing earthquake risk for European society' will be taking place in Assisi, Italy, on 6 and 7 March 2001. A registration file will be put on the Web site www.eurogeosurveys.org on 29 September 2000.

The workshop, which is open to the general public and scientists, will bring together a broad spectrum of geoscientists to focus on a better understanding of earthquake processes and risk in over 40 countries in the greater European area, with about 100 delegates expected from these countries.

The areas that will be discussed include the causes of earthquakes in Europe, how seismic waves work (from deep level to surface effects), and limiting the damage caused by earthquakes, with a few case studies being used as examples.

Another motive behind the workshop is to keep the public aware of informed of seismic risks.
