A Luxembourg landing for business angels
The findings of a report named 'Informal investors and the financing of innovative technology' will form the basis of the meeting as informal private investors, dubbed 'business angels', will be invited to meet those heading innovative projects.
One of the co-authors of the project, Greville Warwick, points out why this type of meeting is important. 'At this stage of development, banks don't want to know them [researchers]. Venture capital is probably too far down the line, so these business angels are essential in helping to provide funding.'
Around 80 people are expected at the event, which forms part of the European Commission's innovation/SMEs programme. Issues such as the role of the academic institutions in new technology-based firms' success, how these should draw up a successful business plan and whether public or private measures help them most will be discussed at the event. Similar events are planned in the near future.
