The findings of ParlEuNet, a European initiative for students to learn about the European Parliament through multimedia resources and electronic networks, will be presented at a conference at the Parliament in Brussels on 21 June 2000.

Entitled 'New technology tools and European awareness: a winning tandem for European learners', the conference will look to establish guiding principles for the use of new technologies in the fields of education and research, based on the conclusions of the ParlEuNet project, due to finish in June.

The European Commission's educational and multimedia task force has financed the project, which involves 12 schools in seven Member States.

Students have used Internet connections, videoconferencing and a website to access information on the Parliament, create their own projects, and exchange information and views with members of Parliament and students in other countries.

One pupil involved in the project had this to say about the videoconferencing: 'When you first came on and you could see the other school. And you actually think 'Wow, I'm talking to someone in Europe'.'

Another said: 'I learned to work on the Internet. It is not that I'm an expert now, but I don't have to yell help every five minutes'.

The project falls in the line with the Commission's eEurope initiative, which proposes to bring the Information Society within reach of all European citizens.
