Workshops for mobilising socio-economic research
The European Union is undergoing radical changes ranging from the establishment of a common currency to the process of enlargement, from new family structures to new ways of working. Research can help understand these changes, by identifying opportunities and risks, and assessing the feasibility, acceptability and impact of different policy options.
In this light, the European Commission has launched a series of 12 'dialogue workshops' to mobilise socio-economic research for the benefit of citizens, policymakers, non-governmental organisations and business.
The workshops aim to broaden the reach of research products, and encourage two-way communication between researchers and research users. A Commission statement says: 'Research should not only aim at communicating its results to the people outside the research system, but should listen to and learn from the experience and concerns of the various social actors or stakeholders'.
All the workshops will take place in Brussels and will involve between 40 to 50 participants from various disciplines and backgrounds. A limited number of places will be available in addition to the invited speakers and participants.
The first workshop, 'Technology, Economic Integration and Social Cohesion' took place in Brussels on 22 and 23 May. Further workshops planned for 2000 will address the following topics:
- work and welfare: 9 to 10 November;
- regional dimensions of RTD strategies: 24 November;
- employment funding: 6 to 7 December.
Workshops planned for the year 2001 will address:
- global trade and globalising society: challenges for governance, economic development and sustainability;
- welfare and family;
- education and social cohesion;
- European citizenship: beyond borders, across identities?
- European regional innovation research and the process of EU enlargement;
- new development models;
- organisational change, work, and the use of ICTs;
- assessing the effects of European Monetary Union on economic and social cohesion.
