Following preliminary actions on wave energy launched over one year ago in the context of the JOULE programme (the specific programme of RTD in the field of non-nuclear energy, 1990-1994), the Commission of the European Communities is now sponsoring the first European wave energy symposium, to be held in Edinburgh on 21-24 July 1993.

The symposium, organized by the UK National Engineering Laboratory (NEL) and the Department for Enterprise of the UK Department of Trade and Industry, comprises several reviews of main RTD activities undertaken over the past decade both in Europe and overseas. It will also provide the first opportunity for the preliminary series of projects, which are near completion, to present results.

It has been widely recognized that waves represent a very substantial clean energy resource, even if the fraction of their energy which could be utilized is limited by various environmental and technical factors. Wave energy is a relative newcomer to the energy field, and its successful utilization has had to overcome scientific and technical problems which, in several respects, are more difficult and challenging than for other renewable sources of energy. Much RTD work still remains to be done in order to improve the competitiveness of wave energy conversion when compared with conventional energies.

On 24 July a post-conference technical tour will visit the OWC (Oscillating Water Column) pilot plant on the island of Islay, western Scotland.
