The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) is organising an opening event for the European Reference laboratory for industrial and vehicle emissions (ERLIVE) in combination with an international workshop entitled 'Vehicle emissions, a major challenge for society and industry'.

European Commissioner for Research, Philippe Busquin, will inaugurate the event together with the Italian Minister for Research Mr Zecchino on 11 July 2000 in Ispra, Italy.

'The research carried out by ERLIVE will contribute to the development of a European Research Area and the coherent implementation of both national and European research activities,' says the JRC.

ERLIVE is being set up in response to concern over the steady flow of new knowledge on anthropogenic environmental pollution and various hazards to public health. The JRC's Environment Institute is therefore establishing ERLIVE for reference studies of emissions from industrial and on-road transport. 'The aim is to develop an independent centre of expertise that is able to successfully link future environmental legislation targets with the requirements of the citizen and societal stake holders,' says the JRC.
