Dublin plays host to the European Institute of Women's Health (EIWH) conference on promoting gender equity in public health this year, from 9 to 12 September.

'For the first time the issue of gender equity in public health in Europe is to be explored and debated comprehensively, with two days of keynote speeches and roundtable discussions,' says EIWH.

Much of the discussion will focus on the organisation's new framework document on the issue, written with support from a European-wide advisory committee of multi-disciplinary experts. Mr David Byrne, European Commissioner for Health and Consumer protection will launch the document and officially open the conference with his views on the potential for gender mainstreaming in public health across Europe.

Roundtable discussions will be divided under the broad banners of gender equity in research, education/information policy and planning. 'It is intended that these round table discussions will lead to the development of recommendations for best practice in mainstreaming gender equity,' says the EIWH.

After the conference, the group plans to set up an advisory network that will lobby for the inclusion of the key recommendations from the conference in EU public health policy.
