'Gemolab' a workshop on the use of genetically modified (GM) lactic acid bacteria as starters for dairy fermentations is will be held in Brussels on 26 September 2000.

The event targets representatives from the dairy sector involved in research, development and manufacture, as well as consumer organisations and the press. It is organised in the framework of the EU-funded 'Gemolab' demonstration project, aimed to develop prototype genetically engineered dairy starters to manufacture improved dairy products.

Speakers from the Gemolab consortium will first present the project's objectives and achievements, after which representatives from the dairy sector will be able to air their positions alongside consumer group organisations. A round table will follow, providing an opportunity for further discussion.

'In these days of defiance, if not hostility, towards genetically modified organisms and micro-organisms, the scientists and industrialists active in the Gemolab project believe it is important to convey a positive message by communicating their results and expectations to a large audience, and to entertain an open dialogue with people outside their field of expertise. This is truly the aim of the Gemolab workshop, where ample time will be devoted to answering questions from the audience during the round table and the following walk-in buffet,' says Professor Jean Delcour, Gemolab coordinator.
