6 September 2000 - 6 September 2000

Following Sweden and Finland topping the league table of Europe's most innovative nations last month, the European Commissioner for Enterprise and the information society, Erkki Liikanen, who oversaw the establishment of the table, will be addressing the 'eScandinavia 2000' conference on Friday morning.

His speech will focus on making eEurope a reality and what is required for this. Specifically he will look at how digital entrepreneurs challenge the role of government and analyse whether 'old government has to reinvent itself' to complement the new e-environment. This will mean that self regulation rather than 'top down' regulation will prevail, economical self reliance over subsidies. Mr Liikanen will discuss how the Commission will respond to these challenges and how it plans to stimulate the economy.

The conference as a whole will analyse the development of both the digital company and the digital economy, with the use of case studies drawn from Scandinavia. It will address the issues facing both the new 'dot com' companies as well as the e-issues facing established companies.
