Benchmarking industry-science relationships
The lack of takeup of collaborative agreements made between SMEs (small and medium sized enterprises) and higher education institutions and non-university research centres stand at just 10 per cent and six per cent respectively.
These figures fall well below the 20 to 40 per cent of SMEs that express an interest in cooperation with research institutions. The event in Berlin, to be attended by representatives from over 40 countries, aims to focus on what the best practice of increasing this type of cooperation could be.
Specifically, the conference will deal with the following issues:
- how can cooperation between universities and research centres be intensified without reducing basic research?
- what new instruments are available for financing innovative research at the science industry interface?
- how can the specific problems of small and medium sized enterprises with regard to specific access to knowledge and networks of science and industry be solved at the national and international level?
The conclusions of the conference will be written up into a series of guidelines available to companies, universities and research centres.
