Some 120 researchers who have held a Marie Curie Fellowship or similar transnational fellowship are to participate in a conference for young researchers taking place in Crete, Greece, on 4 to 7 October 2000. Marie Curie Fellowships are awarded by the Commission to young researchers at post-doctoral or equivalent level.

Attending the conference will be Research Commissioner Philippe Busquin and Achilleas Mitsos, General Director for Research. Other EU representatives, as well as representatives from EU and non-EU universities and research centres, and international companies will also be in attendance, and will hold keynote lectures.

The conference will centre around four themes, all of which are important for the proposed European Research Area. These are :
- matching the needs and capacity of European researchers in Europe,
- facilitating the mobility of European researchers and scientists,
- mobility as an instrument for the transfer of knowledge and technology and
- the European dimension of scientific education.

Workshops centred around these topics will take place, where experiences and opinions regarding the above issues will be discussed.

The conference will provide an opportunity for Marie Curie fellows to give their input into the discussion of some of the most important issues affecting European research today. For more information, please contact:
