The South African Department of arts, culture, science and technology (DACST) has invited abstracts for a seminar on the measurement of innovation activities in Pretoria, South Africa on 28 and 29 March 2001.

Jointly organised by the Organisation for economic co-operation and development's (OECD's) Directorate for science and technology policy, the OECD Centre for co-operation with non-members (CCNM) and the DACST, the seminar has several aims.

First, to make OECD countries' experience in the measurement of innovation available to a broader range of countries having technological capabilities.

Second, to provide an exchange of experiences between OECD countries and those non-OECD economies which have embarked in conducting innovation surveys, in particular large economies such as Brazil, China, Russia and South Africa.

Finally, the seminar aims to consider a broader use of innovation surveys as a means of measuring science and technology activities in countries where they may be a complementary tool, and sometimes more relevant than other sets of quantitative measures, for example, R&D statistics or technology balance of payments.

The event will bring together participants from various regions (Central and Eastern Europe, South Africa, Latin America) and is open to experts on the measurement of technological innovation from backgrounds such as government agencies, national statistical offices, universities and international organisations.
