In conjunction with the French presidency of the European Union, the French Economic and Social Council and the European Economic and Social Committee (ESC) will be holding an international conference on 'New knowledge, new jobs - the impact of new technologies' in Paris on 8 November.

Speakers at the conference will include former Commission president Jacques Delors, Pierre Moscovici, French minister for European affairs, Donald Johnston, Secretary-General of the OECD and Michel Rocard, Chairman of the European Parliament's Social Affairs Committee. A 'Paris Declaration' will be presented at the close of the discussions by the presidents of the European ESC and the French ESC.

The conference fits well with the French presidency programme of work, which stated the desire to make Europe the world leader in the information society, and to create a real 'European knowledge area'. At the European Council in Lisbon in March, ministers also stressed how important it was to step up the links between innovation, the dissemination of knowledge and employment, in order to ensure social cohesion.

The conference will bring together 300 representatives of civil society organisations from the Member States and a delegation from each of the economic and social councils of Europe, together with representatives of similar institutions in the applicant countries of central and eastern Europe. For more information on the programme, please consult the following web-site:
