The European Commission's Research DG is inviting the submission of abstracts for a conference on the contribution of European socio-economic research to the benchmarking of RTD policies in Europe, to take place on 15 to 16 March 2001 in Brussels.

The conference is supported by the Fifth Framework programme's Human potential programme's key action - improving the socio-economic knowledge base, and forms an integral part of the policy process launched with the Commission's communication 'towards a European Research Area'.

On 15 June 2000, Europe's research ministers instructed the Commission and the Member States to benchmark national research and technological development (RTD) policies in Europe as regards human resources, public and private investment, scientific and technological productivity and the impact on economic competitiveness and employment. Benchmarking should also address cross-cutting issues such as the RTD culture, public understanding of science and coherence and diversity in RTD in Europe.

Interested experts should submit analytical, empirical, strategic and synthetic papers.
