A forum on scientific and technological research as a tool for regional integration and the development of the Euro-Mediterranean partnership is to take place in Capri, Italy on 9 to 11 December 2000. The event is being organised by the National Research Council of Italy (CNR) and the 'Office for scientific and technological co-operation with Mediterranean partner countries' (SMED) in collaboration with other national and international institutions and organisations as well as experts from the Euro-Med countries who form the 'International scientific committee'.

The forum will bring together representatives from the European Commission's Research DG and External Relations DG, high representatives from public RTD institutions and experts from the EU Member States, the 12 Mediterranean partner countries and Libya.

The objectives behind the meeting include the identification of priorities and initiatives to foster Euro-Mediterranean co-operation in science and technology, the identification of operational synergies between different programmes and frameworks for co-operation, the generation of support for the creation of a Euro-Mediterranean Research Area and the fostering of networking and co-operation between RTD institutions and industry, business and civil society.

The results of the meeting are expected to complement the work of the Research DG and the External Relations DG in finding operational synergies between different programmes and to enhance the role of RTD co-operation as a means for the development of the Euro-Mediterranean area. A follow-up process is envisaged to lay the basis for the development and implementation of all the actions agreed during this international meeting. For further information, please contact:
