'European Awards for the Environment' will be given to four innovative companies in the area of sustainable development on 5 December.

An award is available for four categories: management, product, technology and international partnership. The European jury made up of 10 members from 9 Member States from academic, industrial, political, institutional and media backgrounds, will select four winners from the 13 nominees, summaries of whose projects are already available on the 'European Awards for the Environment'website www.eu-environment-awards.org(according to MEMO/00/95)

The nominated companies illustrate the huge returns in terms of productivity to be gained by integrating sustainable processes to their activities, such as using tools designed to save on resources. These companies have also increased their competitiveness by keeping ahead of their competitors with regard to implementing the increasingly rigorous European regulations.

European Commissioner for the environment, Margot Wallström praised environmentally friendly processes, saying: 'On the whole, everyone wins: the companies, their customers and, of course, our environment. It is typically a 'win-win' situation.'
