The Greek island of Milos hosts NNESMED 2001 from 20 to 22 June. This international conference on neural networks and expert systems in medicine is the fourth in a recent series organized by the Department of Applied Informatics and Multimedia of the Technological Educational Institute of Crete, Greece.

The first and second conferences were organized and held at the University of Plymouth (UK), in 1994 and 1996 and the third by the Computer science department of the University of Pisa (Italy) in 1998.

The traditional single-track format of these conferences will be repeated at the Milos event in order to foster discussion and information exchange among researchers working in these fields.

'The interest in neural networks, data mining, and fuzzy logic has grown as well as the interest in fully integrated Hybrid Systems,' say the organisers. 'The researchers in the field should contribute in the future to the development of health telematic networks, since the design of innovative medical Web applications will allow the diffusion of research results among clinical operators at every level.'

The following topics will be covered during the conference: artificial networks; expert systems; fuzzy logic and fuzzy experts systems; neuro-fuzzy approaches; uncertainty handling; causal probability networks; model-based reasoning; genetic and adaptive search algorithms; hybrid intelligent systems; chaos theory; machine learning; novelty detection; data mining; verification and validation; risk assessment; safety-critical issues; user interface, human-computer interaction; computer-aided tutoring; intelligent signal processing; multimedia telemedicine and telecare; computer-assisted diagnosis and prognosis; auditing and evaluation of healthcare practices.
