Judges of the Energy Globe Award 2001 have already nominated some of the best entries from more than 1000 submissions, in preparation for a ceremony at this year's 'World sustainable energy day'; which coincides with a major conference in Wels, Austria from 28 February to 2 March.

This annual event showcases outstanding sustainable energy projects and initiatives and illustrates recent world-wide energy trends. Participants include decision makers and experts from the business community, the energy industry, universities and research institutions, technology providers, consultants and the media. Representatives from the European Commission and Parliaments and European national and regional public administrations will also attend.

The event features poster presentations and a seminar on innovative biomass technologies and a conference on 'rural electrification using renewable energy sources', although the presentation of the Energy globe award, which attracted submissions from some 75 countries is billed as the main highlight. 'Outstanding solutions in the categories housing, companies, private and public initiatives and transport are encouraging and are worth following,' hint the organisers. In addition, they reveal the world-wide examples of best practice implementation projects come from countries including Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Peru, Austria and Europe.

World sustainable energy day is held in the framework of the largest exhibition for energy efficiency and renewable energy sources, the 'Energiesparmesse'. In 2000, this event attracted more than 1600 exhibitors and more than 200,000 visitors.
