The European Commission is supporting the first ever conference on 'science shops', which will be held in Leuven, Belgium on 26 to 27 January. The conference is part of the SCIPAS (study and conference on improving public access to science through science shops) project, which has been funded under the Commission's Fifth Framework programme.

Science shops aim to provide independent research support by responding to the concerns of civil society, and improve public access to and awareness of science and technology in their broadest sense.

Work on the SCIPAS project is being carried out by a consortium of participants from nine countries: the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Northern Ireland, Romania, Austria, Israel, South Africa and the USA. Objectives include creating an international network of science shops and thus facilitating greater access to scientific information, and stimulating transnational cooperation between science shops.

The conference will examine the outcomes of SCIPAS and present practical examples of science shop projects. Workshops will cover issues such as setting up science shops, training and quality assessment. The event will end with a presentation of the EU's initiative on raising public awareness of science and technology.For further information, please consult the following website:
