A conference focusing on 'research and development in chemicals: driving growth and innovation' is planned for 12 and 13 March 2001 in Brussels.

The event, organised by the European chemical news magazine, aims to demonstrate practices for sustainable growth through innovative R&D programmes. Highlights will include:

- sustainable development: innovation and success;
- R&D as a tool to create value for shareholders;
- assessing the value of academic research and collaborations;
- effective R&D benchmarking;
- optimising R&D projects;
- value creation from intellectual property rights portfolio;
- intellectual property/technology transfer;
- how to manage R&D in a newly merged speciality chemical company;
- outsourcing R&D projects.

During the event, Commission official Mr Salvador Cervera March will give a presentation on the EU's Fifth RTD Framework programme and discussion of the European Research Area. Representatives from Cefic, the European research council and leading industrial personnel from around the world, are also expected to attend.
