An international conference on 'Renewable energies for islands: Towards 100 per cent renewable energy source (RES) supply' is being organised under the umbrella of the European Commission's Fifth Framework, OPET, and ALTENER programmes in Crete, Greece, from 14 to 16 June 2001.


The event is organised by the National Technical University of Athens, RENES-Renewable Energy Sources Unit together with Insula Ademe Iter Icaen.

The target audience includes:

- Government decision-makers;
- International agencies and programmes;
- Those responsible for islands' energy management;
- Energy agencies that deal with islands;
- Island Universities, research centers and technical institutes;
- Inter-island co-operation networks;
- Industrial associations and operators;
- Technology providers and service suppliers.

Papers covering the following objectives are welcome:

- Promotion of the 100 per cent renewable objective in island areas and small and medium sized islands;
- Dissemination of 100 per cent RES integrated technological systems;
- Identification of feasible 100 per cent RES opportunities in islands;
- Binomial water-energy. Identification of appropriate technologies, barriers for RES - Desalination applications in small and medium-sized islands.
- Promotion of inter-island and international co-operation in favor of developing renewable energies on islands;
- Indication of legal frameworks and regulatory solutions that facilitate their integration;
- Promotion of effective alliances and market strategies;
- Reinforcement of dedicated renewable energy information systems for islands;
- Training and education in renewable energy in islands;
- Identification of necessary awareness actions that help to consolidate the essential role of renewable energies in energy supply, quality of life and the environmental protection of islands.
